Bursitis: What is it and how does Physio fix it?

What is Bursitis?

Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa. A bursa is a naturally occurring fluid-filled sack.  These stop muscles from rubbing on bone.

Why does Bursitis hurt?

The inside of these sacks are covered in pressure sensors which cause pain.  This means that because the sack is extra full, whenever the muscle which covers it contracts the pressure exceeds a threshold and pain is produced.

If the bursa continues to get irritated the bursa can become so full that it is under pressure all of the time and then there will be pain all of the time

How do you get better from Bursitis?

The first step is to find out why this is happening.  It can be caused by one initial event, but then be exacerbated by activity, posture, muscle imbalance or bad habits.

Your Physio, acupuncturist or sports masseuse will check what is causing the problem and discuss the best course of action.  This will give the speediest and most long-lasting cure for you.
