How effective is telehealth physio

Can telehealth physio work?

The clients of Pure Physio have come to expect a high level of assessment and treatment. However, an awful lot of this is “hands-on” treatment. Given the current situation and guidelines, what are the alternatives?

Back and neck pain

Assessment of the spine can be achieved through movement analysis. John’s PhD was originally in the diagnosis of back problems from movement analysis. This analysis can create an accurate diagnosis and, possibly more importantly, a treatment plan of mobilisation exercises to get the back moving in the right way. This can be augmented by core stability or Pilates exercises to give stability to the spine.

The other alternative is an approach known as McKenzie therapy where movement and exercise have always been the primary focus of treatment. It must be good, it was invented in New Zealand!

Ankle pain:

In the early stages of an ankle sprain, we can discuss methods to minimise damaging the ankle while improving the rate of healing. We can also discuss how to start a return to activity and increase your range of motion with safe but effective stretches.

Once the initial pain has settled it’s important that you regain full movement and get your balance to a point where you can live a full life without risking injury

Shoulder pain

By looking at movement patterns during your telehealth physio we can establish what is wrong with your shoulder. For example, when and how movement is limited can establish whether you have a frozen shoulder or a rotator cuff problem.

It depends as to what is wrong with your shoulder, but it is possible to teach stretches, mobilisation and strengthening exercises online. It is also potentially important to address the shoulders proprioception, this is a joint position sense so you know where your arm is in space without looking. This sense can be damaged as it relies on the muscles and ligaments of the shoulder. It can be retrained and I can teach you how, over telehealth connection or possibly over the phone.
